Why an NIS/IISER should be established in Bhubaneswar, Orissa? India is economically shining as a whole. But it is falling behind in science and technology, especially in research. According to [1], the best Indian university, IISc Bangalore is grouped at 300-400 internationally. The next best, IIT Kharagpur is grouped 400-500 internationally. Within Asia they are grouped 37-65 and 66-93 respectively. For a long time India had 5 IITs and one IISc. Since then even though one new IIT has been established at Guwahati and University of Roorkee has been made to an IIT, with large population increase and with India falling behind in Science, there is a need for more IISc (and possibly even IIT) like institutions. Moreover with India's economy doing well now, India can financially afford to create several more IISc like institutions. The Indian government, scientists and academicians all are aware of the above and thus there are plans to create more IISc like institutions. In this context on 9th December 2003, the then HRD minister Professor M. M. Joshi had announced [2,3] that UGC has established steps to initiate four National Institute of Sciences (NIS) at Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Pune and Allahabad. Recently [4], Prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh announced the setting up of two Indian Institute of Science Education%

An impressive gathering of art & craft loving people from different parts of the State enjoyed the colourful function including the famous Chhau Dance exposition. On this occasion a "Craft Bazar" is being organized by the Commissioner (Handicrafts) and the Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India. Crafts persons / Organisations dealing in art & artifacts and crafts from different States like West Bengal, Assam, Meghalay, Delhi, U. P. etc have displayed their wares here. These exhibitors are doing fabulous business and as per available information the Craft Bazar has already done business worth over Rs. five lakh within just four days of its opening. This clearly indicates the potential of Ekamra Haat as a business centre. The Craft Bazar continues up to the 11th of Nov.

1. The media in Bhubaneswar is very aware of the issue and have covered it in local papers
(and local editions of national papers) quite a bit. However, despite the local journalists
sending in many articles, the national papers have not covered it in their national editions that much.
Candidly many journalists suggested me that we write en-masse to the national papers
accusing them of neglecting to cover this issue and that may have an impact. I would suggest we do that.
2. Agamee Orissa has a done a great job and has a great plan
in bringing awareness of this issue (and the bigger picture) to the district level in Orissa. They have
lots of plans on this issue and they will bring it out as time unfolds.
3. There has been a few national coverage of this issue. I suggest that we seize them as opportunities
and write to those papers with additional articles on that issue, letters to the editor etc,
Normally, it is easier to publish on an ongoing topic in the newspaper than on a new topic.
So the papers that have already covered the issue have a higher chance of following it up
with more coverage. The particular coverages are

A nice blog about Orissa.Suresh
This week, we have a lot of good news to share with you. Last week, we felt anxious when we heard about reports on structural weakness of Konark Sun Temple. This week we have some assurance in the form of a government inquiry committee report, which mentions the edifice as safe. Last week, we were eagerly waiting to see if our Hockey team “Orissa Steelers” can break into the Premier Divison. They did it this week with a thrilling win over Imphal Rangers. Kudos to the boys! We were anxious whether the investment climate in the state will suffer because of the recent clashes in Kalinga Nagar. This week some of those notions of fear were dispelled with investors from Russia, UK and Israel flocking to the state and announcing their intention to invest and the much-awaited dedicated Rail-Link corridor getting off with expression of interest being invited. We have been waiting for some sort of representation in Union Council of ministers for long now. This week it got materialized with CS Sahu becoming a Minister of State. But that’s hardly a sort of representation that over 3 Crore of us expected! Seems Orissa has to wait much much longer to get its due representation at center. We have to keep fighting!! Lastly, Government has decided to convert one of our
